Understanding the brief and identifying suitable candidates is the first step in any search. Whilst not essential, having a prior understanding of the sector gives you a head start and over the last 15 years I have built up a good knowledge of various industries such as finance, pharmaceutical, healthcare, marketing and telecommunications.
Whilst the internet and Linkedin have become an invaluable source of market intelligence, I am a great believer in direct telephone contact to obtain information. Throughout my career I have always gone where others fear to tread!
Upon completion of the desk and telephone research I provide a target list of candidates, showing their position, key competencies and experiences, for the client to screen.
Giving the right impression at the first point of contact is a skill that comes only with experience. I usually make the first connection via email to introduce myself and the nature of the role I wish to discuss. Then, depending on the initial level of interest, I will quickly move to verbal contact to build a relationship and go through the key elements of the position in more detail.
To procure the right candidate one needs to develop a strong personal bond and level of trust. I have always enjoyed the challenge of building relationships from the initial cold call to successfully filling a position.
I am an extremely organised person and see this is as a critical success factor in any placement. Throughout any search I will build a data-base containing the target candidates personal details, previous companies and roles, key competencies and a history of contact from first approach to placement and all follow-up in between.
Staying on top of all communications is vital in maintaining momentum for both candidate and consultant and progress will always be reported on a weekly basis or at a higher frequency depending on the nature of the assignment.
As your outsourced search consultant I see my role as fully supporting the recruiting consultant and will therefore manage all elements of the process, communicating at every step.
